Technology transfer connects research, technical knowledge, production methods and intellectual property with institutions and businesses prepared to apply them. Effective transfer helps researchers solve industry problems, firms improve productivity, new products reach the market and manufacturers meet international standards.

Across the Global South, technology adoption supports movement from basic production toward higher-value industries and export markets. Progress depends on skilled workers, research capacity, finance, infrastructure, commercial partnerships and institutions prepared to absorb and retain knowledge.

Why the diaspora matters

Diaspora scientists, engineers, founders, investors and industry professionals connect local partners with international research, equipment, production practices, standards and markets.

Their contributions include joint research, technical training, licensing, product development, startup support, supplier partnerships and access to global production networks.

DCI helps countries establish structured pathways for diaspora knowledge to reach universities, research centers, startups, manufacturers and public agencies.

Our focus

Research and commercialization

We support stronger links among research institutions, industry and investors. These links help move ideas from laboratories into prototypes, products and commercial production.

Advanced manufacturing and supplier development

We examine opportunities for local firms to enter industrial supply chains, improve production methods and meet quality requirements.

Skills and institutional capacity

We focus on technical training, engineering capability, research management and knowledge retained within local institutions.

Finance, intellectual property and deployment

We examine funding, licensing, intellectual-property systems, commercialization support and financing for industrial scale-up.

Standards and export readiness

We support stronger quality systems, certification pathways, logistics and supplier capabilities for regional and international markets.

Priority sectors include semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, automotive manufacturing, agritech, clean energy and digital infrastructure.

Diaspora Technology Transfer Readiness Index

The Diaspora Technology Transfer Readiness Index assesses whether countries have the systems required to connect diaspora expertise with local research institutions, businesses and public agencies.

DTRI identifies strengths, gaps and practical priorities for diaspora-enabled technology transfer. Scores measure readiness. They do not measure research spending, products commercialized, manufacturing output, employment, exports or future income growth.
